From the dawn of civilization to the modern era, the most advanced civilisations were deeply fascinated with this landscape and its climate. Even when they believed that they were only passing through, they have stayed and inhabited the area. Today, Croatia has been transformed into a major attraction for people from all over the world.
The mountain range of The Alps and The Pannonian Plains have joined together under the Mediterranean sun, to create the perfect environment for many bird species, butterflies, animals, both big and small, as well as for many colourful blooming plants. The limestone area is populated with many nooks and crannies, cracks and caves, which provide natural retreats for many animal species. The Nature Parks of Kopacki Rit, Lonjsko polje (field) and Vransko jezero (lake) are protected and unspoiled swamp areas and ornithological reserves. The National Park of Plitvicka jezera (Plitvice Lakes) is a natural phenomena consisting of 16 large and few smaller ‘laddered’ lakes providing a home for more than a thousand plant and herb species as well as about 140 different kinds of birds.
Nowhere else in the world, in such a small area, thrive so many different types of some of the tastiest edible mushrooms including the most valuable of all, ‘tuber magnatum pico’ the Istrian white truffle.
Croatian people refer with love to their history, customs, traditional cuisine, and homemade wine, passing them on to younger generations. Bread is the base food of Western civilization and the first bakers’ ovens where found in the north-eastern part of Croatia. In this area, archaeological excavations found dishes and pots that tell us a story of the exceptional civilization levels of its inhabitants from more than 5 thousand years ago.
Names of dishes are an obvious example of past clashes that resulted in political misunderstandings and intolerance, while, on the other hand, have resulted in blending some of the best gastronomic influences. Brodet, pašticada (the unique Croatian specialties) and risottos are top of Mediterranean culinary art. Dramatic civilization conflicts and wars in Northern Croatia have created the recipes of extraordinary culinary expertise. The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Ottoman Empire fought many wars in this land, introducing their cuisine like cabbage rolls, goulashes, grill and roasting spits. Grilling the oxen on a roasting spit, was the obvious reflection of brutal times on one hand and on the other an amazing feeling in the preparation of culinary perfection. Masters of the spit roasting were considered mythical figures. Cakes were contrived in the castles of ‘’K und K Monarchy’’. Today’s Croatian cuisine is based on the amazing contrasts, resulting in its diverse and unique offer.
