Slavonski Brod is located on the southern edge of the Pannonian plain, between the hills of Dilj in the north, and the Sava River in the south, halfway between Zagreb and Belgrade. Traces from Roman times show that this city has always been a place with a crossing, bridge over the river. First settlement, since the Roman era, had the name Marsonia (Marsvnnia) that was later mentioned as the "old town", Brod and Brod na Savi. Favourable geographical position, favourable continental climate, fertile soil and proximity of the river contributed to the creation of settlements in this region already in pre-historic times.
On the north-eastern part of the town, on Galovo locality, was relatively recently discovered the site of rich Starcevacka (Starčevačka) culture from the early Stone Age. Apart from the fact that this is the biggest site from the Stone Age in North Croatia, it is extremely important to emphasize that the material remains found there confirmed the 8000 years old existence of Brod settlement.
