History and tradition

Grad Bakar

Several thousand years ago this area was inhabited by Japodians and Liburnians who created commercial ties, established towns and built the first wooden boats. Across the whole Kvarner area they built a strong japodian-liburnian cultural mix. Today, there are famous carriers of the maritime tradition of the region, where many diversities merge: the hard working men, salt and sea, sun and stone. Arrival of the Roman Empire is characterised by many life and cultural changes. Cities, roads, commercial and maritime ties have been developing. Bishoprics and monumental churches as well as forts and ruins were built. The Roman remains include the tower of Trsat, the Old Gate, the remains of thermae and many other cultural sites.
Prior to all other tribes and people, one of the major maritime and inland cities on the Adriatic coast was the city of Bakar. Its first inhabitants were Celts, followed by the Illyrians, Greek seafarers, the Romans, Venetians, Austro-Hungarians, Croats... People were engaged in grape vine, olives, figs and almonds growing. Gradually the tradition of farming and grape vines and olive trees growing passed through generations. Grape vine, brought to Novi Vinodolski by the Romans, has the tradition preserved until today. Wine, customs and love for cultivation were spread over the island of Krk and further.

The two largest Croatian islands, Krk and Cres, have similar natural development, similar culture of agricultural activities and masonry. The stone walls used for boundaries between the fields and herds of sheep are distinguished monuments of our ancestors' culture.
The county of Vinodol occupied the fortified cities like Trsat, Grobnik, Bakar and others, all the way to Novi. It was controlled by the dukes of powerful Frankopan family that governed the county of Vinodol and Krk, right up to River Rasa (Raša). The family built castles and fortresses throughout the Kvarner and Highlands.
In the 14th century, Rijeka became the cultural, commercial and maritime centre with a strong tradition in shipbuilding, maritime affairs and production, opening the first drugstore, hospital, city school and Italian and Kaptol school in croatian language using the glagolitic letter.

Many cultures, tribes, religions and beliefs, empires, rulers, priests and other powers, contributed to the heritage of this region, connecting the incompatible. Coming and going, they all left a part of themselves and space for someone else. Rijeka, together with the entire Kvarner, mountains and islands, develops special senses, wealth and fruits this special region offers. The development of cities, education, culture, art and industry begins with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Ivan Lupis, born in Rijeka, invented the underwater weapon called torpedo; thus was built the first and only torpedo factory in Europe. Many famous painters, artists, poets, novelists, explorers and creators were born in this region...
The tradition of folk music, instruments and dance is nurtured for centuries and passed from one generation to another. It enriches every corner of the seaside and mountains. But tradition is what lives among the poeple of this region, nourishes and inspires their lives. One of these traditions is the Carnival, dating from prehistoric times and celebrating the victory of life over the winter, the birth of the new and the liberation of the old ghosts. Hand made masks and carnival trails, singing and dancing, fritulas and wine – these are the symbols of the Carnival of Rijeka.
