Croatian literacy

The Glagolitic script is the first Croatian script founded around 9th century, that was found in late 11th century in Jurandvor on the island of Krk. The Croats have used this unique script from the 9th to the 19th century. This is supported by the fact that the first book printed in Rijeka was Misal by the Roman law, printed in the glagolitic script. Originally created for the clergy, the script later became a generally and widely accepted.

But before Baska tablet (Bašćanska ploča), the oldest prose monument dating from 11th and 12th century. There are Glagolitic epigraphical monuments: Valun records, Plomin label and Krk inscription from the 11th century etc... Baska (Baška) tablet is the first wholly preserved monument written in the Glagolitic script and the old Croatian language containing elements of the Slavic church language.
The oldest legal text in croatian language was written in Glagolitic script, in the 13th century. The Vinodol law is the most important Croatian document of the medieval law, written in Glagolitic script. It found its place among many historical documents of the period.
