History and culture

The earliest cultures of this area date back to Neolithic period, but the beginnings of civilization development and arrivals of inhabitants on this area have started with Illyrian tribes of Liburni. Zadar has prospered from trade development, ship gateways discovery and navigation lines. Romans came here and built a city within a diagonal streets and squares structural division. Roman Forum, walls around the city, water supply system, towers, and amphitheatre were built, a valuable heritage of the city.
The entire region is rich in cultural and historic heritage that was left by numerous nations; St. Donatus church - first medieval oval basilica, St. Anastasia’s cathedral, People's Square (Narodni trg) with City's Lodge (Gradska loža) and Guardhouse (Straža) , walls, wells, door and bell towers. The islands are also full of historical heritage; Kastelin (Kaštelin) on Vir, St. Michael’s Fort on Ugljan, Franciscan and Benedictine monasteries on Pasman (Pašman), and Toreta Tower on Silba. Around 17th and 18th century the island of Silba was an important centre of sailors and sailing ships as well as maritime trade of wine. The Toreta tower is also called 'the tower of love'. According to the legend, a sailor had built a tower as a symbol of unrequited love, but also a symbol of a new love he patiently waited for, yet as a lonely old man.
People were engaged in agriculture, viticulture, olive growing, trade and seafaring. Wars and conquests, invasions of the cities and the occupation of the area by many people - Goths, Byzantines, Avars, Slavs and Venetians who have changed social habits, way of living and required adjustments.
The area was populated by priesthood and cultural life was developing intensively. The first university was opened, and monasteries, palaces and churches were built. The city already had thermae and water supply system, whose remains are visible today.
