Gastronomy
Dalmatian cuisine is simple and easy. It consists of fish, crabs, shells and molluscs, smoked ham (prosciutto), cheese and cooked vegetables poured over with olive oil. It is important to mention a very popular and delicious dish, grilled calamari sprinkled with mixture of olive oil, chopped garlic and parsley.
Olive oil carries a long, thousand year old tradition. On the island of Ugljan there are about 200 000 olive trees, while wider surroundings have several hundred thousand. Tradition of olive growing was held until today, which is proven by the remains of the olive processing machine. Ugljan is rich for another production - a two way production of sardines, marinated and salted. Very healthy and quite cheap blue fish goes great served with homemade bread baked under the lid and a glass of homemade red wine.
Lamb from Pag is soft and young cattle meat. Grilled or prepared under the baking lid is a specialty of the entire coastal cuisine, particularly the island cuisine. Other famous specialties are fish brodetto, grilled fish, young onions, wild asparagus and light fish or vegetables soup.
The unique product of Zadar is a sweet liqueur Maraschino, traditional and autochthonous product made of cherry maraska that prospers only in Zadar area. It has a bitter-sweet taste, very specific and world famous. It is usually drunk after dinner as a digestive that will sweeten all your senses.
