Dalmatia - Sibenik - History
The fortified city of Sibenik (Šibenik) was built by Croats around 9th century. In the period when the Medieval Croatian state was being developed, Sibenik (Šibenik) has been developing too. It was first mentioned in 11th century in the 'The deed of donation' of King Petar Kresimir (Krešimir) IV. Shortly after, many nations have struggled for possession of the city, from the Austro-Hungarians over the Byzantine Empire to the Venetians. But the city continued to progress - the culture, arts, maritime affairs, trade and the entire economic was spreading and developing.
In the era of Venice, the city was one of the most important humanistic and Renaissance centers, where many writers, architects, historians, painters, worked, including Faust Vrancic (Vrančić), Renaissance figure, who has been working in various fields, from science till theology, and wrote the first Croatian dictionary.
Many state governments, empires, monarchs and the military have altered here, until the Croatian Public Party took over the municipal administration of the city. In the meantime, the city has developed, expanded, built waterworks, built hydro-electric power plant. People were engaged in maritime affairs, ship building, fishing, sea sponges and corals harvesting, viticulture, agriculture, olive growing on the islands.
