History

The fortified city of Dubrovnik takes our breath away. In the Middle Ages, Dubrovnik was one of the major maritime-trading states with more than 80 consular representative offices, a commercial fleet with approximately 700 sailboats. It was a city protected by the walls in which the life was blooming. The only fortress that is not within the walls, but sitting on a high cliff, is Lovrijenac, and represents an important historical defense from Venice. If you enter the city through the west entrance, through the old city gate Pile, you pass by the big Onofrio's fountain, the narrow main street Stradun, next to the Gothic-Renaissance palaces, the buildings, streets and squares. Your look goes up at the City bell tower, a small Onofrio's fountain, a stone pillar where the knight Orlando stands watching and protecting the city. A stone paved road will lead you to the Church of St. Blaise/Crkva Svetog Vlaha, cathedral Marijina Uznesenja, Duke's palace/Knežev dvor and the Sponza Palace. Each step further is a story for itself. Its old city remained trapped in the Middle Ages, as if still waiting for dukes and gentlemen, priests and young peasant women to walk down its streets. The city was mainly engaged in trade of various goods, the production of wool, soap and glass, trade and navigation, followed by bloom of culture and education.
